vacation

…I’ve completely forgotten about updating this blog, isn’t it?  Well, let me tell ya… ok, I have no “real” excuse except there are a whole lot of things to do that are more fun than sitting in front of a computer lately and I know many of you with kids can understand.  I mean, there’s been Octoberfest, pumpkin patches, Halloween, the Alamo, Thanksgiving, hotdogs on sticks over a firepit in the backyard, football season, Christmas decorations, and trip-to-Hawaii planning… We are a busy family these days and aside from all the “events”, it’s the simple family time and playtime that keeps us happily busy.

Ft. Leonard Wood had a great Octoberfest complete with authentic bratwurst, knockwurst, beer, and an oompah band.  We had a lot of fun with the boys who loved exploring a little of their German heritage by dancing around and generally acting silly, a favorite pass-time these days.

Side Note:  The food was so good at Octoberfest!  In fact, there is a German deli in town called Paradise Deli that has unbelievably good wurst… knockwursts as big around as my forearm. (and I’m not exaggerating)  Believe it or not there is another German restaurant in town called The Hub that has the best, most authentic German gasthaus food I have ever had outside of Germany (and I’m still not exaggerating)  Who knew, here in the middle of absolutely nowhere, of all places…

Anyway, not too far from us is a cute little pumpkin patch where the boys got a nice ride on a “cow train” before picking out their jack-o-lantern pumpkins.  They liked feeding the goats and were scared of the pigs, but they played in the corn bin and generally had a great time.

“Where’d that silly pumpkin go???”

Tanner and Tucker were cute “scary” little skeletons for Halloween.  They had more fun actually passing out candy to all the kids in the neighborhood than eating any of it.

As far as historical landmarks go, the boys’ favorite (and their only so far) is the Alamo in San Antonio, TX.  We spent a week there (in San Antonio, not the Alamo, hehe) with Julie as she attended a military Physician Assistant conference.  Go ahead, ask Tanner where the Alamo is…

“Alamo??  Did somebody say ice cream???”

Julie’s Mom & Dad came to visit us for Thanksgiving and we had a wonderful time.  Julie’s turkey was cooked to perfection and aside from the sweet potatoes (I’m not a big fan of brown-sugar-marshmallow-smothered orange goop) , everything was set for a day of reflecting on all the things we have to be thankful for.  I thank God for all the blessings in my life.

Grandpa & Grandma helped us break in our fire pit with some hot dogs and s’mores in the backyard too.  Flaming marshmallow anyone?

“Hot dog!?”               “Yaaaay!”

We were sad when Grandma & Grandpa headed home to Ohio, but our thoughts soon turned to planning our trip to Hawaii for Christmas this year.  Yep, we are officially clinically nuts! We will be taking the boys on a 14 hour trip (after a 4 1/2 hour drive to Kansas City) to Hawaii.  And despite how that my sound to anyone who has travelled with kids under 2, we are looking forward to it very much… being there, not getting there, that is.

Oh, but before that our attention is focused on an epic Christmas light decoration contest with our neighbors across the street.  It won’t be so bad that we could stand in front of the electric meter and feel the breeze from the spinning dial… but close.

And the winner is…

I guess we should light ‘em up first!

Well, I got Julie hooked on Facebook, so look her (and me too) up there.
For now, it’s time to say “byebye!”  Merry Christmas everyone, I’ll post more here next year…

Getting “Zrbt’s” from Daddy

Well, today is my first day home alone.  Of course I’m not really home alone, I have Tanner and Tucker to keep me company.  And they are really great company.  By home alone, I mean my parents (Grammy and Papa) have gone back “home” to Hawaii for the Winter and Julie is back to work after a wonderful vacation to Wisconsin and a week off at home.  My Mom and Dad were here for the boys’ first six months of life and we enjoyed every minute of it.  I know it was tough for them to leave; as tough for them as it was for us, I think.  I know we have lost a great deal of support in taking care of our boys.  My Mom was wonderful with them.  My dad was great with them.  (THANKS MOM AND DAD!!!  FOR EVERYTHING!  WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU!)  I learned so much from them over the past six months and I know Julie feels the same.  Now, alone during the weekdays, I carry on.  (I re-read this last sentence and it sounds like a chore but believe me, it is an absolute pleasure!)  It is really awesome to be able to be there for my boys.  God has truly blessed us with the ability to raise our boys the way we are.  By the way, the boys are napping nicely right now. :-)
…and I should be doing laundry, or something else productive, right?

So, what next… Well, the boys had their 6 month well-baby check-up on the 24th and they both passed amazingly.  Tanner weighed in at 18 lbs. and 26 1/2 inches long.  His big little brother Tucker weighed in at 19 lbs. and 27 1/4 inches long.  They both hit all the right development marks even for their uncorrected age (they were born 1 month early), so that’s fantastic.  “Solid” food has been introduced too.  (Ok, remember, nothing at this point is solid, if you know what I mean.)  Favorites are sweet potatoes and peas (and much to my dismay, prunes), and they have now had their first taste of meat, if you can really call a pureed mushy mess of goopy liquefied rice and chicken meat.  But hey, it says so on the label, so who am I to disagree.  Tastes like Chef-Boyardee-in-a-can to me…

How about some pictures?  A wide mix this time.  Some vacation shots including Lambeau Field, our wonderful Inn in Door County, some pumpkin patch shots, and a variety of others…  We even spent a good deal of time landscaping around the house, so some before and after pictures will follow in the next post.  Enjoy these pictures for now.

Countdown:
T-minus 202 Days to Julie’s due date…

We can hardly believe everything we have been through and done these past few weeks. We got stuck in the earthquake in Hawaii on the day were were supposed to leave. All electricity was out on Oahu and the airport never recovered that day. We sat at the airport all day from about 8am to 4pm before they “cancelled” our flight, but we were blessed enough that Julie’s Mom was able to help us book a flight the next day to LA and our friends Jeff & Kristy graciously put us up for the night at their wonderful home in Ewa Beach. We made it out successfully the next day and began our trip cross country. Click on the picture of Julie in the snow to see a few pictures of our trip starting with the crowded airport.

Getting from Hawaii to KC

Our cross-country trip started in Long Beach, California where we picked up the car and drove to Las Vegas, Nevada. We visited Hoover Dam took some dam pictures and bought a few dam souvenirs, then we checked into the Luxor Hotel and Casino (that’s the pyramid on The Strip). The next day we drove into Utah, through Zion National Park, visited Bryce Canyon National Park and drove the most beautiful road in the US, Highway 12 to Torrey, Utah. This was our first experience with real cold too, and I mean, we were cold, it was 41 degrees!!! The next leg of the trip was a long one from Torrey, Utah through Capitol Reef National Park, into Colorado to a small town east of Denver. For our last travel day, we we hightailed it across eastern Colorado and ALL of Kansas to Fort Leavenworth and our new “home”. The Kansas City area and especially our new home near Platte City is absolutely beautiful. There are rolling hills and more trees than we could have imagined. Needless to say, it made a wonderful first impression on us!

No one could ever accuse us of letting moss grow under our feet because we move really really fast! In fact, our primary goal of getting to the Kansas City area so early before Julie has to start work was to find a house. Well, I am happy to report we found a house in 2 days and are scheduled to close on it next Friday, November 10th. We move so fast, that it was actually the very first house we looked at on the rainy Saturday we arrived in the area and we only had to look at about 15 more before we decided we liked the first best. There will be many more pictures to follow and probably a whole post dedicated to the new house, but I have included a couple of teaser pictures here for now. The house is on a … about a mile from the Platte River. It is a new construction and once our custom work is done, it will have 4 bedrooms, three baths, a three car garage and a nice covered deck out back. We are really looking forward to moving in!

Since we still have until November 23 until Julie will actually start work, and we already have a house lined up, we thought we would take a trip to see Julie’s family in Grove City, Ohio, just outside Columbus. So, we finalized some things with our real estate agent and our banker, and hopped back in the car for the 700 mile drive to Columbus. We are staying at Julie’s sister Diane’s house in a cute little town called … and are completely enjoying our time with the whole family. We are especially enamored with our 14 month old nephew Aizik and 10 month old niece Alice whom we had never met. And of course, our nephew Hunter, who will be five in May, is truly a joy to be with, he is such a good kid. Grandpa and Grandma Boso are excited to think their grandchildren will be doubling in number when Julie and her sister Linda deliver in May and November (this month!) respectively. Three will become six very quickly! Click on the picture of Julie holding Alice for a few more pictures of us and Julie’s family. We got the whole family together at Diane’s house for a Thanksgiving style meal and a pumpkin carving extravaganza!

October 29th at Diane’s House

We will be heading back to Kansas City on Sunday by way of St. Louis to pick up the Jeep which is available for pick up on Monday morning. Once we get back to KC, we will have a lot to do: Close on the house, move in, get some furniture, and of course Julie’s favorite (or maybe not), decorate the house! Personally, I am still in denial about all the baby stuff we need to get, but I’m sure a few more panic attacks in Babies’ R Us or the Baby Superstore will put me at ease :-)

By the way, Julie seems to be feeling a little better these days and her appetite is slowly returning. She is now 11 weeks along!

Love to all.
